M31 The Great Andromeda Galaxy
(Added : 12/6/2007 Hits : 244 Rating: 10 Votes: 1)
This Galaxy is 220,000 light-years across and is located some 2.3 million light-years away. Looking similar to our Milky Way galaxy that we live in, Andromeda is of our closest neighbors and a member of the Local Group of galaxies. It is easily seen with the naked eyes from a dark site, but is breathtaking in a small telescope or binoculars, and appears larger than six times the diameter of the full Moon! The light that recorded this film image left Andromeda when the first humans called Homo Erectus evolved on earth over 2 million years ago! This is a single 40-minute, unfiltered exposure with the Meade LXD75 8" Schmidt Newtonian. The image was captured with an inexpensive, 26 year old Olympus OM-1 using Fujichrome Provia 400F slide film. The scope was manually guided with an Orion 910mm F/L guidescope.

Our Sun taken thru an F:/6, 100mm refractor + Ha filter. 26mm Plossl and 6mm Ortho. Nikon CoolPix 5600 at 105mm telephoto equivalent. Would have used my Meade LPI, except the LCD was too weak to see in bright sunlight. Note to self: purchase a 5~6 meter USB extender cable for camera/laptop!
